Unique blend of naturalizing bulbs and perennials garners plenty of attention at Keukenhof

Lisse, May 6, 2024 – The final week of Keukenhof’s opening has arrived, and the park is still in full bloom. It’s the perfect time for the contributors to Keukenhof to take stock. The teams from JUB Holland, Rijnbeek Perennials, and Keukenhof are meeting at the Bulb Mania Mix in the spring park. In December 2023, these parties planted a diverse selection of naturalizing bulbs and perennials in the joint border—an eye-catching piece of nature amidst the vibrant patches of bulb flowers that Keukenhof is known for. The teams have come together to review the border's development, share feedback and experiences, and plan for the next season.

Arno Rijnbeek comments, “The Bulb Mania Mix was designed by landscape and garden designer Carien van Boxtel, in close collaboration with Keukenhof designer Frans Beijk and his team of gardeners. The border offers a natural, meadow-like appearance within Keukenhof, with an exceptionally long flowering period. You can see that visitors really take the time to appreciate the unique flowers and foliage on display. The information board with a QR code helps provide visitors with more details about the plants they might not typically expect to see at Keukenhof. While most plantings are removed after Keukenhof closes, the naturalizing bulbs and perennials from the Bulb Mania Mix will remain in the ground to bloom again next year, likely even earlier and more abundantly than this first season, as the plants have now established themselves well.”

The JUB Holland team, a long-time contributor to Keukenhof, regularly brings clients and partners from home and abroad to the park throughout the season. Robbert Uittenbogaard reflects, “A visit to the park has become a staple of our JUB Study Days and is an excellent opportunity to showcase new ideas like this mixed border, spark discussions, and gauge reactions. Our partners, as well as ourselves, have been pleasantly surprised by the early blooms, unique leaf textures, and great variety. The Bulb Mania Mix pairs beautifully with our own Indigo design, which is right next to it. It inspires our clients and visitors to Keukenhof for their own garden and landscape projects. We’ve even started receiving requests for 10-square-meter packages of the Bulb Mania Mix that we’ll be offering together.”

Keukenhof is also optimistic about this new development. Designer Frans Beijk states, “The border is performing exceptionally well and quickly gained momentum. It’s wonderful to see that almost weekly, different flowers take the spotlight in this unique mix. At first, it was the botanical tulips, euphorbia, and mertensia that attracted attention; now it's the turn of the white late daffodils, anemones, camassia, and centaurea. There’s always something new to see, which keeps it exciting. Even the old tree stumps that have found a new purpose in the border are planted with fritillaria and helleborus, creating many surprising photo opportunities. We’re looking forward to seeing how this border develops in the next Keukenhof season.”

Visitors to Keukenhof during this final week before it closes on May 12 can find the Bulb Mania Mix at the eastern edge of the park, just over the bridge by the windmill.
