Indigo: colour and application
Indigo is a natural dye extracted from, among others, the tropical plant Indigofera tinctoria. The main use of indigo is colouring jeans. However, the colour is also used to dye wool 'navy blue'. Indigo does not bind particularly strongly to the fibres in textiles, so wear and repeated washing cause the dye to slowly disappear from the fabric, creating sheet shades of blue.Indigo is also used as a pigment in painting.
It is a slightly predominant blue colour, hinting at green.
Indigo: the meaning of blue
Blue represents both the sky and the sea and refers to open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration and sensitivity. Blue also represents depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith and intelligence. Indigo is also a tribute to the garden philosopher, author and seed grower Rob Leopold (1942-2005), who published the beautiful book 'Blue Flowers', in which several garden architects, artists and writers express their love for blue flowers.
Inspired by the many shades of indigo, a wildly diverse mixture was chosen. The naturalising bulbs in particular set the blue tone, while the mauve and lilac shades of the tulips and the moon-yellow shades of the daffodils provide depth and colour contrast. This makes the enchanting blue stand out even more, like a night blue sky with moon and stars!
