VELVET | keukenhof 2023

In 2023, designer Carien van Boxtel was inspired by woven velvet carpets in beautiful floral patterns for the design of our JUB stand at Keukenhof.

Velvet

Velvet is a woven fabric, where upright fluff, called the pile of silk or cotton is woven along with the warp threads and cut. Velvet is soft and shiny and has traditionally been used for expensive clothing. Originating from Asia, the technique of velvet weaving flourished in Italy around 1400, particularly in Lucca, Florence, Venice and Genoa; the latter city is still a velvet centre. In the 16th century, Bruges became a centre of velvet weavers, rivalling the Italian example in quality.

Tapistry

Weaving 'velvet' carpets/tapistry is an ancient craft practised by the Arts and Crafts movement in the late 19th century. Founded in 1861 in the UK by designer William Morris, Morris & Co. has designed and produced (to this day) countless carpets, both hand-woven and on weaving machines.

Patterns and colours

Carpets, woven in the most fantastic repeating floral and flower-based patterns and rich, saturated colour schemes are the inspiration for JUBHolland's presentation for Keukenhof in 2023. Burgundy, black, purple, bronze, ochre, warm orange and brown were chosen, with warm yellow and white/cream as contrast colours/accent colours.
