Colour in a low-maintenance planting system under dry conditions

Bulbs under dry conditions, among grasses and prairie plants

A prairie garden is a low-maintenance planting system that contributes to a natural balance among various plants. The combination of strong perennials and ornamental grasses ensures that the garden presents a completely different display of color and structure five to six times a year. This makes the appearance attractive throughout the year. Since many prairie plants take longer to establish, bulbous plants are used to provide color in the spring. Suitable species for a prairie garden include allium, camassia, leucojum, ornithogalum, and iris, as well as botanical tulips and narcissi. Integrating bulbs into a prairie garden not only enriches biodiversity but also attracts various insects and other animals, contributing to the ecological value of the garden.
